What's New: Using Professional Writers
For those of you out there who have never had the privilege of working with a professional writer, here are your justifications for contracting with one.
12. If you contract the writing for a communication piece to a freelance professional writer, you have a scapegoat if some well-connected reviewer chooses not to agree with your vision of the message. "Gee, it was that darn writer…"
11. Unlike those pesky full-time employees, the freelance writer goes away when the job is done.
10. You get to tell people, "I’ll have my writer work up something on that and I’ll get back to you."
9. If you can find a writer who wears a threadbare sport coat or drives an old car, you get to feel good about your salary and your full-time job.
8. If you find a writer driving a fancy sports car and wearing $600 outfits, you can take satisfaction in anticipating that the writer must be successful and therefore is bound to do a good job on your project.
7. You can bone up on obscure rules of grammar and annoy the writer by pointing out syntax violations in his or her prose. You’ll catch the writer torn between not wanting to offend you and not wanting to appear ignorant; it could be a great time!
6. Since freelance writers work on a per-project basis, they may tend to be politer than employees who think they have a job entitlement and tell you whatever’s on their mind.
5. You may be able to have a good time negotiating. When the writer offers a price, shout "What!" and wait to see what happens.
4. You get to laugh at the writer when you forget to tell him or her it’s a casual day and he/she turns up in a suit.
3. Maybe the writer has worked on projects with famous people or products (or animals) and has good stories to tell.
2. Maybe the writer will make you famous by revealing your taped conversations to the public when the tapes are subpoenaed in some future legal proceeding involving you or your company. ("California, here I come…")
1. When the communication piece turns out well, you get to take the credit.
